The formula for a Christie mystery is to throw a plethora of characters into a baronial mansion somewhere in the English countryside - Essex, in this case - and then add the pompous, eccentric and officious Hercule Poirot who appears after a crime has been committed。 And voila, as the fly leaf proclaims, the criminal is ferreted out。 Not my cup of tea。 As cute and formulaic as that cliche I just used。 Sorry, Christie fans, she just doesn't engage me。 Instead of following all red herrings, I figu The formula for a Christie mystery is to throw a plethora of characters into a baronial mansion somewhere in the English countryside - Essex, in this case - and then add the pompous, eccentric and officious Hercule Poirot who appears after a crime has been committed。 And voila, as the fly leaf proclaims, the criminal is ferreted out。 Not my cup of tea。 As cute and formulaic as that cliche I just used。 Sorry, Christie fans, she just doesn't engage me。 Instead of following all red herrings, I figure I'll just go to the end and see what the great master has to proclaim。 。。。more

why did it end with。。。 "Never mind。 Console yourself, my friend。 We may hunt together again, who knows? And then-"the unfinished sentence hurts me and makes me want to read the next book immediatelyAnyways, For being Christie's first book, I found it very entertaining。 She introduces Poirot's character through a classic murder mystery story and expands on his quirky ways。 While she has better works, I think the book does its purpose nicely。 why did it end with。。。 "Never mind。 Console yourself, my friend。 We may hunt together again, who knows? Enjoyable, light read!

I wanted to see how Hercule Poirot arrived。 Interesting, too, on his reasons for taking on the case, and to read Christie's original ending though I think the editor was correct in suggesting the change。 I wanted to see how Hercule Poirot arrived。 Interesting, too, on his reasons for taking on the case, and to read Christie's original ending though I think the editor was correct in suggesting the change。 。。。more

Classic round (and round) of red herrings and useless hints, like no other。 Lots of fun in true Agatha Christie style。

Very good start to Hercule Poirot stories in an audiobook version was done well by Hugh Fraser but some parts in the start had clarity issues in the pronunciation and understanding of the words which improved in the later parts。

This is more of a 3。5 leaning to 4 stars。 My first Agatha Christie book and audiobook! The characters were memorable enough that it was not difficult to follow along through an audiobook。 Similarly, the plot is also quite simple, besides Poirot purposefully withholding information from Hastings throughout the book。 I appreciated the short length and concise conclusion at the end, which made this an incredibly satisfying read。 I look forward to picking up And Then There Were None as well as Murde This is more of a 3。5 leaning to 4 stars。 My first Agatha Christie book and audiobook! My prompt pick for my Go Fish TBR Game Firstly a huge thank you to Hannah @boundbycrime for being on hand in my tbr game and giving me her book recommendation for my prompt card。 So this is my first Agatha Christie book and I was so excited to finally read a Hercule Poirot one。 But unfortunately I'm one of those rare people, who just isn't here for Agatha's books unfortunately。。。which sucks as I had high hopes! For me I was confused with the writing style as it's based after the Great War, the dialogue was very oldern times and I just got lost on what it all was meant to mean。 I also felt that the plot was very slow。 (You should know by now I like my fast paced books!) I did enjoy Poirot and Hastings characters。 I liked their friendship they had, and the fact that the pair of them worked together to investigate the Styles Hall death。 I also liked the detective investigation too, it was very interesting to watch Poirot look for clues and unravel what really happened。 I also didn't predict who the murderer was, which was good as I do love a who dunnit story。 I can see why many like Christie's books and not everything about this book was bad。 Just for me I prefer things to be fast paced and I need to understand it。 I have the second book in the Poirot series, so I will read that and see if things get better for me。 However, if not then I won't continue。 I do realise I'm a rarity here, so please don't not try Christie's books just because of my review, I definitely say check them out and make your own opinion on it。 。。。more

Written more than 100 years ago, this was a pretty quick read。 Apparently written on a bet, that Agatha Christie couldn't write a detective novel in which the reader couldn’t deduce the criminal。 I was surprised, but I'm no mystery junkie :)This is the first Hercule Poirot novel as well, following a short story written a few years earlier。 Have read many reviews that say this is not the best introduction to the little Belgian - better to go back and read this later as a "prequel"。It is also in t Written more than 100 years ago, this was a pretty quick read。 Apparently written on a bet, that Agatha Christie couldn't write a detective novel in which the reader couldn’t deduce the criminal。 I was surprised, but I'm no mystery junkie :)This is the first Hercule Poirot novel as well, following a short story written a few years earlier。 Have read many reviews that say this is not the best introduction to the little Belgian - better to go back and read this later as a "prequel"。It is also in the public domain, available on project Gutenberg and better, https://standardebooks。org/ebooks/aga。。。 which edits and cleans up Gutenberg titles。 I liked it。 。。。more

The turn of events was very nice although it was very obvious at the beginning who the killer was。 In my opinion, the story is stretched out so it became a long read。 This is my first book of Agatha Christie, I'm not aware if that is her style of writing。 I guess I'm more of a straightforward show episode type of mystery fan。 ♡ The turn of events was very nice although it was very obvious at the beginning who the killer was。 In my opinion, the story is stretched out so it became a long read。 This is my first book of Agatha Christie, I'm not aware if that is her style of writing。 I guess I'm more of a straightforward show episode type of mystery fan。 ♡ 。。。more

Christie’s favourite review of this, her first mystery, was from the Journal of Pharmacology who credited her with knowledge of drug interactions and chemistry (specifically precipitation reactions) which she learnt during her WW1 work in the dispensary。

Agatha lo mejor! Tantos detalles!

This was a very old fashioned writing but it completely makes sense as it was first published in 1920。 I struggled keeping with lots of details at the start and maybe the first few chapters are very slow。 The book in itself is quite short so it seemed like a huge chunk of it was just used for building characters。 I think I'm a bit biased but I definitely love a good mystery, so will recommend to give this book a read。 This was a very old fashioned writing but it completely makes sense as it was first published in 1920。 I struggled keeping with lots of details at the start and maybe the first few chapters are very slow。 The book in itself is quite short so it seemed like a huge chunk of it was just used for building characters。 I think I'm a bit biased but I definitely love a good mystery, so will recommend to give this book a read。 。。。more

3。5 StarsI did not know Poirot is this comical。 I also did not know Hasting is a simple and acquiescent guy。 You need to doubt the character who is not at all suspicious in a mystery book。 Aha!This phrase is everything, “Everything must be taken into account。 If the fact will not fit the theory-let the theory go。”This one was a little too complicated to my taste, but I enjoyed it all right。

I read every Agatha Christie book I could get my hands on when I was young but only found this one recently。 I have walked through her house and peered at the tiny space and typewriter she penned her many mysteries, then wandered across the beautiful grounds and down the river to the sea shore。 I am an avid fan and this book left me well satisfied。 Hercule Poirot is a delightful character
